The upcoming PS4 games for 2020 and beyond

Cyberpunk 2077 is played in a first-person perspective as V,[14] a mercenary whose voice,[15] face, hairstyles, body type and modifications, background, and clothing are customisable. Stat categories—Body, Intelligence, Reflexes, Technical, and Cool—are influenced by the character classes that players assume, which are NetRunner (hacking), Techie (machinery), and Solo (combat). The perk tree branches into melee, blades, handguns, shotguns, rifles, sniper rifles, hacking, two-handed combat, assassination, "cold blood", engineering, and athletics. V must consult a "ripperdoc" to upgrade and purchase cyberware implants; black markets offer military-grade abilities. The rarity of any given equipment is shown by a coloured tier system.V can take cover, aim, run, jump, double jump, and slide. Melee strikes can be dealt with close-combat weapons. There are three types of ranged weapons, all of which can be customised and modified—Power (standard), Tech (which penetrate walls and enemies), and Smart (with homing bullets). Ranged weapons are equipped to ricochet bullets in a target's direction and slow them down in bullet time. Four types of damage can be inflicted and resisted—Physical, Thermal, EMP, and Chemical. Weapon use increases accuracy and reloading speed, which are manifested in character animations. Gunsmiths repair and upgrade weapons. The game can be completed without killing anyone, with non-lethal options for weapons and cyberware.

The open world metropolis Night City, California consists of six regions—the corporate City Center, immigrant-inhabited Watson, luxurious Westbrook, suburban Heywood, gang-infested Pacifica, and industrial Santo Domingo. Its surrounding area, the Badlands, can also be explored. V navigates these locations on foot and in vehicles, which are subject to either a first or third-person view. In autonomous cars, V can more easily engage in gunplay.[14][21][27][30][31][32] Pedestrians are vulnerable to vehicular collisions.[26] Depending on the location, law enforcement may be alerted if V commits a crime.[33][34] Radio stations are available to listen to.[35] The full day-night cycle and dynamic weather affect the way non-player characters (NPCs) behave. V owns an apartment and a garage. Night City features non-English-speaking characters, whose languages can be translated with special implants."Braindance" is a device that allows V to undergo other people's experiences.Branching dialogues enable interaction with NPCs and actions in quests.[41] Experience points are obtained from main quests and fuel the stats, while side quests yield "street cred", unlocking skills, vendors, places, and additional quests. Quests are acquired from characters known as Fixers.[26] Throughout the game, V is aided by various companions.[17] Consumables, like soft drinks, are used for healing, and objects can be inspected in V's inventory.[23] Minigames include hacking, boxing, auto racing,[43] martial arts, and shooting ranges.[44] "Game over" messages only appear at the point of death; if a quest is failed, the game moves on all the same.[45] Player choice leads to different endings.[40]dit]

Night City is an American megacity in the Free State of North California, controlled by corporations and unassailed by the laws of both country and state. It sees conflict from rampant gang wars and its ruling entities contending for dominance. The city is reliant on robotics for everyday aspects like waste collection, maintenance, and public transportation.[46][47] Its visual identity is derived from the four eras it underwent—austere Entropism, colourful Kitsch, imposing Neo-Militarism, and opulent Neo-Kitsch.[48] The Internet is managed by corporations and the army.[5] Homelessness abounds but does not preclude cybernetic modification for the poor, giving rise to cosmetic addiction and consequent violence. These threats are dealt with by the armed force known as Psycho Squad.[49][50] Trauma Team can be employed for rapid medical services.[51] Because of the constant threat of physical harm, all citizens are allowed to openly carry firearms in public.

Watch Dogs Legion

Watch Dogs Legion

Release date: October 29, 2020
Genre:
Action-adventure
Buy: Watch Dogs Legion pre-orders

What is it? A hacking, action-packed adventure set in a futuristic, dystopian post-Brexit London.

Why is it so interesting? Watch Dogs Legion takes place in a dystopian post-Brexit London, where drones and hackers roam the city in spades. What's so interesting about this new Watch Dogs experience is that while hacking is still at the heart of the game, building up a team of agents is what really drives it. Absolutely every NPC in the city can be recruited and is therefore playable, which is pretty exciting. Especially when you can play as a badass grandma like Helen who we were introduced to during E3 2019. The futuristic depiction of London already looks impeccably detailed, and with so many playable characters, Legion looks set to be the most interesting Watch Dogs entry yet.

Spider-Man Miles Morales

Release date: November 12 (US) / November 19 (UK)
Genre:
Action/Adventure

What is it? A sequel to Marvel's Spider-Man released for PS4 in 2018, following our new spidey, Miles Morales.

Why is it so interesting? Miles Morales is taking centre stage for this brand new Spider-Man adventure, which is intended as not quite a sequel but rather a standalone story akin to something like Uncharted: Lost Legacy. A more compact, cost-effective offering aimed squarely at the PS5 launch day, but handily also arriving on PS4 too.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Release date: November 10, 2020
Genre: RPG
Buy: Assassin's Creed Valhalla pre-orders

What is it? The latest entry in the Assassin's Creed series filled with Viking action.

Why is it interesting? Assassin's Creed is returning with Valhalla, and happily, it's set to release towards the end of this year. As Viking assassin Eivor, you'll be able to choose to play as a man or woman and customise them with tattoos and hairstyles. Filled with plenty of RPG elements that build on the most recent Assassin's Creed games, you'll set out to 9th century England and build up settlements. With Viking raids, plenty of battling action, and choices to make, Valhalla looks set to be one very memorable assassin adventure.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Release date: November 12 (US) / November 19 (UK)
Genre: Platformer

What is it? A brand new Sackboy adventure, but this time launching away from the main LittleBigPlanet series.

Why is it so interesting? Sackboy's doing a spin-off, and it's a brand new platform adventure featuring our favourite knitted hero. With a new 3D perspective - rather than the usual 2.5D - Sackboy: A Big Adventure is launching simultaneously for PS5 and PS4. It's playable in single-player or in co-op with up to three friends.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077

Release date: November 19, 2020
Genre: Action-RPG
Buy: Cyberpunk 2077 pre-orders

What is it? A new game from CD Projekt Red, the creators of the hugely successful Witcher series.

Why is it so interesting? Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person RPG  that places a heavy emphasis on personal modding and action, and while it's still as deep an RPG as you'd expect, it's way more action-heavy than CD Projekt's previous game, The Witcher 3. One gameplay example we've seen is that you can shoot through enemies while hacking their weaponry with your mind, and scanning the environment with visual enhancements. Everything looks gorgeous in-game, and there's a real distinct look to everything, with the inhabitants of the city ranging from barely enhanced humans to outlandishly modified gangsters and technologically advanced drones. During E3 2019, we learnt a lot of new information, including the fact you'll be able to finish the game without committing a single kill, and freaking Keanu Reeves, who will be playing a big role in the RPG, took to the stage to reveal the long-awaited release date.

Twin Mirror

Release date: December 1, 2020
Genre: Psychological thriller

What is it? A new psychological thriller from Dontnod Entertainment, the creators of the Life is Strange series.

Why is it so interesting? You play as protagonist Sam, en route back to his hometown to attend his best friend's funeral. But he's not alone on this journey, as he's accompanied by his alter-ego, the Double, who acts as his advisor / pestering wise-ass / the self-confidence he doesn't have. This duality is at the heart of the game's story, and gameplay too. But when Sam wakes up the day after the funeral, he finds a blood-soaked shirt in his hotel room. His own shirt, but who's blood? You'll then use Sam's unique memory visualisation ability, by entering his mind palace, to discover solutions to the various puzzles, solutions and crimescenes he finds. It's part CSI investigation, part narrative game, where you switch between the real location and Sam's mind to uncover the story. It's got hints of Heavy Rain in there too. We are so in.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising

Gods & Monsters

Release date: December 3, 2020
Genre: Adventure

What is it? A new storybook adventure in a world of Greek mythology from the creators behind Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

Why is it so interesting? The team behind Assassins Creed Odyssey announced at E3 2019 that it is breaking free from the limitations of the history books to bring us a new fantastical adventure based on the stories of Greek Mythology. As the hero of the story, the gods of Olympus turn to you for help, and bestow you with their powers to take on all the mythological creatures who have invaded the Isle of the Blessed. You'll work to save the gods and face down the most fearsome and powerful mythological creature of all. Immortals: Fenyx Rising is wrapped up in a beautiful painterly style that promises to deliver one very charming and interesting open-world adventure.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Release date: TBC 2020
Genre: Action-adventure of the Lego variety

What is it? All nine Star Wars films in one Lego game.

Why is it so interesting? Lego and Star Wars is always a winning combination. Being able to play out every single Star Wars movie - from a New Hope to The Last Jedi -  in Lego form makes for one delightful adventure, and that's exactly what we're going to get with the recently announced Skywalker Saga.  While we've already gotten to experience most of the Star Wars films in the form of Lego games, we'll be able to play out the latest adventures with Rey and the gang, too. We're not sure if the previous games will be tweaked in any way or just remastered, but regardless, they're sure to be just as enjoyable.

Carto

Release date: Fall 2020
Genre: Puzzle adventure

What is it? A "world-shifting" puzzle game from Humble Bundle and Sunhead Games

Why is it so interesting? With its charming art style and interesting puzzle mechanic, Carto looks set to take us on a wonderful adventure. As a cartographer called Carto, you rearrange pieces on of a map, and the world shifts and changes around you. By connecting pieces and joining up the tiles, you'll uncover new lands on the map as you help Carto journey home, and encounter a host of quirky characters who you can help and befriend.

Where the Heart Is

Release date: Winter 2020
Genre: Narrative Adventure

What is it? A choice-based narrative adventure that takes you on a journey through the protagonist Whit's life.

Why is it so interesting? Armature Studio is bringing us a narrative adventure that blends imagination with reality as you explore the protagonist Whit's past and future. From his childhood to adult life and beyond, every choice you make will influence where Whit's path will lead, with many different endings to discover. From surreal to emotional moments and everything in between, Where The Heart Is takes you on a story-driven journey that explores familial ties.

Boundary

Release date: TBC 2020
Genre: FPS

What is it? A competitive first-person shooter set in space.

Why is it so interesting? It's a competitive first-person shooter set in space. Absolute madness. Not on a planet, or with ships, but astronauts armed to the teeth in the nothingness of space. You'll have multiple Astroperators to choose from (the devs term not mine), with various abilities and custom loadouts. There's a grappling hook too. It all looks a bit bonkers to be honest, and we're so down for it.

Worms Rumble

Release date: TBC 2020
Genre: Action

What is it? An area-based Worms experience with real-time combat

Why is it so interesting?
On the 25th anniversary of Worms, a new entry in the long-running series was first announced with Worms Rumble. As a single champion, you must head into the heat of combat in battles with up to 32 players. With lots of weaponry fans of the series will recognize, you can try to take out the competition in all manner of ways. Made up of several different modes, including a classic Deathmatch mode and the series' very own take on Battle Royale with Last Squad Standing, Worms Rumble really is shaking things up with real-time combat.
